The Durham University Music School is one of the city’s leading centres for musical performance and education. Located within Durham’s historic university estate, it provides high quality rehearsal rooms, recital spaces and performance facilities that support both students and visiting artists.

The venue offers an intimate and acoustically refined setting, ideal for chamber performances, workshops and emerging artist showcases. Its close connection to the university community also makes it a natural home for youth ensembles, masterclasses and collaborative projects.

As part of Durham Jazz Festival, The Durham University Music School provides a platform for new talent and educational activity, supporting the festival’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians alongside established national and regional artists.

Direction

The Durham University Music School is located at Palace Green, Durham, DH1 3RL, in the heart of Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, between Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle.

By Car (From the A1): Exit the A1 at Junction 62 and follow the A690 towards Durham City Centre. Continue over Milburngate Bridge and follow signs for the city centre. Palace Green is within the historic peninsula where vehicle access is restricted. We recommend parking at Prince Bishops Car Park or Walkergate Car Park and walking to the venue, which is approximately 5 to 10 minutes away.

By Car (From the A167): Follow the A167 to Nevilles Cross and turn onto the A690 towards Durham City Centre. Continue into the centre and use one of the nearby public car parks. From the Market Place, walk towards Durham Cathedral and Palace Green to reach the Music School.

By Bus: Durham Bus Station on North Road is approximately 8 to 10 minutes’ walk from the Music School. Walk towards the Market Place, then follow signs to Durham Cathedral and Palace Green.

By Train: Durham Station is around 12 to 15 minutes’ walk from The Durham University Music School. Leave the station and walk down North Road into the city centre, continue through the Market Place, head towards the Cathedral, and follow signs to Palace Green.

Accessibility

Street Level access. Steep hill from Saddler Street to Palace Green. Suitable for small number of wheelchair users. No accessible toilets Limited parking for Blue Badge holders is available on Palace Green directly in front of ⁠Durham Cathedral, though spaces must be requested in advance by calling Durham University at 0191 334 2222. (Advance exemption from the council is also required as this is in the congestion zone)
